Early Deans in the Diocese of Exeter

Devon & Cornwall Notes & Queries 11, (1920-1921), pp. 102-104.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Dean of Exeter is the head of the Chapter of the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in Exeter. The chapter was established by Bishop William Briwere (1224-44) who set up the offices of Dean and chancellor of Exeter Cathedral, allowing the chapter to elect those officers. This Note explores the possibility of Deans of Christianity existing in Exeter prior to Bishop Briwere having established the office. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. The copy of this rare book is held in the collection of Albert William Bryant Messenger, and is available from the Internet Archive.
