Sidelights on the Work and Times of a
Great West-Country Prelate in the Twelfth Century
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXXVII, (1905), pp. 188-199.
by
Rev. Oswald J. Reichel, B.C.L. & M.A., F.S.A.
Index prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was read at the Association’s July 1905 Princetown meeting. The paper results from an examination by Rev Reichel, of papal Decretals collected as an Appendix to the records of the third Lateran Council held at Rome in 1179. Decretals are letters of a pope that formulate decisions in Catholic Church ecclesiastical law. An analysis of the contents and number of these decretals provides much of interest to the historian and genealogist about the life, time and relative importance of Bartholomew Iscanus, Bishop of Exeter. He came from Normandy and after being a clerk of the Archbishop of Canterbury, was made Archdeacon of Exeter in 1155. He became bishop of Exeter in 1161, and was known as having excellence in canon law and theology. During his time as bishop he visited all the parishes in the diocese to investigate how well-managed they were. The paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
