Nicholas Hilliard (c.1547 – 7 January 1619) was a goldsmith and limner best known for his portrait miniatures of members of the courts of Elizabeth I and James I. He generally painted small oval miniatures, but also some larger cabinet miniatures, up to about 10 inches tall, and at least two famous half-length panel portraits of Elizabeth. He enjoyed continuing success as an artist, and continuing financial troubles, for 45 years. His paintings still exemplify the visual image of Elizabethan England. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Harvard College Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
