Farley is essentially an English name, possibly derived from a toponym (from fearn meaning "fern" and leah meaning "woodland clearing"). It is used as both a surname and a given name. An Adam Farlegh was registered in Somerset during the reign of Edward III. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.

H. W. Farley during the latter years of his life practised as a civil engineer and surveyor at Exeter, where he died on 14th August, 1883. He joined the Association during the Dartmouth Meeting, in 1869, being then resident at Kings- wear. He became a life member in 1878.
