The paper was presented at the Association’s 24th July, 1913 Buckfastleigh meeting. The Act Books contain entries of the meetings of the Council of the City of Exeter and the Orders and Minutes of that august body. This paper succeeds an introductory paper presented by the author at the Association’s 1912 Exeter meeting. While the latter was chiefly concerned with "police-court work," the present paper deals more particularly with financial affairs. A great part of the earlier volumes is in the handwriting of John Vowell alias Hoker. Books 3 and 4 were indexed by Richard Izacke, Chamberlain of the City. Professor Harte’s paper can be found in a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
