Kairpen-Huelgoit: Which is called Exeter
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 48, (1916), pp. 341-362.

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1916 Plymouth meeting. Its title is taken from “Historia regum Britanniae” (The History of the Kings of Britain), originally called “De gestis Britonum” (On the Deeds of the Britons). The Historia is a pseudo-historical account of British history, written circa 1136 by Geoffrey of Monmouth. It chronicles the lives of the kings of the Britons over the course of 2,000 years, beginning with the Trojans founding the British nation and continuing until the Anglo-Saxons assumed control of much of Britain around the 7th century. The quote taken directly from Geoffrey’s Historia is that “Vespasian sailed to the Totnes shore (Totonesium litus), and marched upon Kairpen-huelgoit, 'which is called Exeter (quae Exonia vocatur)”. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
