Archaeological Discoveries made in Exeter during April and May, 1878.

Trans. Devon. Assoc., 1878, Vol X, pp. 335-348.

by

Edward Parfitt

Prepared by Michael Steer

For a great many years, archaeologists believed that the Romans had little influence in Devon. The Romans established a large fort in Exeter, then called Isca Dumnoniorum, and a few other smaller forts at, for example, Topsham and Countisbury. It was assumed they did not venture further into the southwest and on into Cornwall. Over 140 years after Parfitt’s article was submitted, recent excavations in Southeast Devon, West of Exeter, challenge this. A Roman road, and extraordinary collections of Roman coins show that at least that area of the county was very much under Roman influence, and part of an economy that involved the centre of the Empire. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
