The Pedigree of Sir Thomas Bodley

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 35, (1903) pp.713-745.

Prepared by Michael Steer

Sir Thomas Bodley (2 March 1545 - 28 January 1613) was a diplomat and scholar, His greatest achievement was the re-founding of the library at Oxford. In 1444, the existing university library was augmented by a gift of some 300 manuscripts from Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, the youngest son of Henry IV; this prompted the university to build a new library above the Divinity School which was at that time under construction. However, during the Reformation of the 1550s, the library had been stripped and abandoned, remaining virtually untouched until the return of Bodley in 1598. The library was later named the Bodleian Library in his honour. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.

The complete Bodley pedigree faces page 713, It is folded and therefore, not amenable to copying by Archive Books
