The Kalenders and the Exeter Trade Gilds before the Reformation
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 44 (1912) pp. 406-430.

Mrs Frances Rose-Troup
Prepared by Michael Steer
Gilds existed in England from a very early period. Only four copies of the ordinances of these ancient brotherhoods, written in Anglo Saxon, have been found, Two of these are from Devon; one from Exeter, the other from Woodbury. The former dates from the early 11th century. The Kalendars' Guild, a fraternity of male and female laymen and clerics, gave its name to Great and Little Kalenderhaye in Exeter. Very little has been written about the Gild. This paper attempts to redress the deficit. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. The copy of this rare book is held at the Princeton University Library and is available from the Internet Archive.
