William Wynard's Charity in Exeter, &c.
W Norton, Printer to the Town Council (1865), 137 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
William Wynard (also Wonard or Wenar), Recorder of Exeter 1404-1442 founded his "Godshouse"; or "almeshous," in Magdalen Street for 12 infirm poor people on Jan. 20, 1436, He placed it under the supervision of the Mayor and 12 citizens. Wynard's Almshouses, with its attractive cobbled courtyard is one of the most evocative pieces of medieval Exeter. Among the property with which Wynard endowed the almshouses was The White Hart Inn in South Street. Much of this building dates from the 16th century, when it was known as the Blue Boar. The initial chapters, pp.1-75, are followed by an Appendix in Latin pp.76-106, with an English translation pp. 106-137. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held by the Bodleian Library that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
