On the Borders of the Tamar and the Tavy
In a series of letters to Robert Southey Esq In Three Volumes, Volume the Second
by
Mrs Anna Eliza Bray
London: John Murray: A.K. Newman and Company, Darling & Son Printers (1838). Volume II, illus, v; 356 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
Anna Eliza Bray (25 December 1790 - 21 January 1883) was married to Edward Atkyns Bray, the vicar of Tavistock. From 1826 to 1874 she produced at least a dozen novels. but her most popular were based on the principal families (the Trelawneys, Pomeroys, and Courtenays) of Devon and Cornwall. These historical novels proved so popular that they were issued in a set of ten volumes by Longmans in 1845-6, and reprinted by Chapman & Hall as recently as 1884. The most entertaining and valuable of her books was The Borders of the Tamar and the Tavy (1836, 3 vols.), which describe, in a series of letters to Southey, the traditions, legends and superstitions that surround the town of Tavistock. It was reviewed by Southey in the Quarterly Review. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Harvard University Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
