Note: Pasted into the front of the copy of the book from which this index was drawn up is a note from the publisher (JAD Bridger) in response to a query in 1950 about Vol II, which says "Vol 2 never published and never will be as author dead. Vol 1 o/p & scarce."

The book contains detailed information which, if indexed properly, would produce an index nearly as long as the book. For the purposes of this "index", what is indicated is family names covered, the chapter in which they appear and a guide to how substantive the reference is, as follows:

Passim - One single reference e.g. "John Smith married Elizabeth Brown of Truro" or "The manor was sold in 1718 to the Smith family".

2 Generations - The reference covers two generations e.g. "John Smith married Elizabeth, daughter of George Smith of Truro" or "A secondary branch of the family was established at Truro, descendants of George, the fourth son of John Smith."

Pedigree - The reference covers at least three generations. If the family name is the same name as the chapter name then substantive information is likely.
