The Chapel of La Wallen, Gidleigh

Devon & Cornwall Notes & Queries 11, (1920-21), pp. 129-138.

by

J. Rawson

Prepared by Michael Steer

In this Note, the Rev. J Rawson argues convincingly that the small ruined building at Gidleigh that has served as a cow byre for centuries is the remains of the chapel of La Wallen, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was desecrated in 1332 when the clerk Robert de Middlecotte committed a murder there. The building's alignment, construction and disposition of the windows certainly look like those of a small chapel and it is probably no accident that the nearby farmhouse is called Chapple. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. The copy of this rare book is held in the collection of Albert William Bryant Messenger, and is available from the Internet Archive.
