The Dynham (also Dinham) family resided at Nutwell Court in Woodbury parish since at least the early 12th century and were patrons of Hartland Abbey. They were for several centuries a leading family of gentry in the county. The first record of the Dynhams holding land in Devonshire is a charter of 1122 of Geoffrey, lord of Dinan in Brittany, recording his gift to the monks of Marmoutier, Tours, of two manors he possessed in England by the gift of King Henry I. This paper presents and describes a survey of Dynham lands taken in 1566 for Henry Compton Esq, afterwards Lord Compton Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries.
