Women in the Church Accounts

Extracted by Gail Thomas from

Hartland Church Accounts, 1597-1706

Gregory, Ivon L. (Ed.). Hartland Church Accounts, 1597-1706. Frome: Butler and Tanner (1950) 372 pp.

The following table lists all entries that refer to women in the church accounts, named and unnamed; some were residents of Hartland and others were passing through. When women were listed simply as Mtris with a surname, or as 'the wife of' a particular man, I have endeavoured to identify these women from the parish records. That additional information has been inserted in square brackets in italic type.

Spelling is verbatim. Amounts in the account books were given in Roman numerals until 1630-31 and then in Arabic numerals. Pounds = li; shillings = s; pence = d. Dates conform to the convention of the Julian calendar, when the legal year began on 25 March. Dates from 1 January - 24 March are designated OS (Old Style). The Gregorian calendar has been used since 1752 and a date of 20 February 1630 (OS) would today be written as 20 February 1631.
