"HIGH HAMPTON, a small village, on a bold eminence, 4 miles W. of Hatherleigh, has in its parish 365 souls, and 3200 acres of land. J.M. Woolcombe, Esq., is lord of the manor, but Sir J.H. Williams and C. Burdon have estates here. The latter resides at Burdon, which has been held by his family since the reign of Richard I. The Church (Holy Cross,) is a small structure, which was partly rebuilt in 1833, and has a tower and three bells. An ancient Norman doorway is preserved. The rectory. valued in K.B. at £18. 19s. 4½d., and in 1831 at £212, is in the patronage of J.M. Woolcombe, Esq., and incumbency of the Rev. Henry Woolcombe, M.A., who has held it since 1810, and rebuilt the Rectory House about 16 years ago. The glebe is 140 acres, and the tithes were commuted in 1844, for £197. 10s. per annum. The poor have the interest of £14. A small National School was built in 1834." [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
