Notes on the History of Highweek
Trans. Devon Assoc. vol. 16 (1884), pp. 435-443.
by
Rev. S.G. Harris
Prepared by Michael Steer
This account of the history of Highweek was read at the Association's July 1884 meeting at Newton Abbot. The author was Vicar of the parish and his paper relies heavily on notes prepared by his friend Mr Davidson. Much of the information it provides has been superseded by later research. The first documentary reference to Highweek is as Teyngewike in c. 1200. By 1301 it was being called Heghwyk, the reference to the prominent (high) hill on which it stands. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
