Gleanings from a Parish Chest

Trans. Devon Assoc. vol. 16 (1884), pp. 662-669.

by

Rev. S.G. Harris

Prepared by Michael Steer

The author was Vicar of Highweek and makes a compelling case for the importance of the Parish Chest to historians. By 1427, parishioners in Highweek had built a chapel, but had to carry their dead about three miles to the parish church in Kingsteignton. They successfully petitioned Pope Martin V for their own graveyard, and the church and its churchyard were consecrated by Edmund Lacy, Bishop of Exeter on 19 April 1428. Until 1864 it remained a chapel of ease to Kingsteignton. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
