Modern Science and Marine Wave Action

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XLIII, (1911), pp. 294-308.

by

Arthur L. Hunt

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1911 Dartmouth meeting. It follows Mr Hunt’s paper on wave action presented at the Association’s 1887 Plympton meeting, and his paper on his elucidation of the controversy over tidal ripplemarks, presented at the Association’s 1907 Axminster meeting, and includes a vivid account of his academic battles with the Geological Society and of amateur-professional rivalries. The author appended to the article, a list of 35 papers, abstracts, articles, and letters, having bearing on submarine geology and physics, that he contributed to various reports, transactions, journals, magazines, and newspapers (reprints) 1877-1910, averaging about one a year. The article will be of particular value to genealogists with an interest in Devon’s geology. It is from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
