On Earthquakes in Devonshire from the Earliest Records to the Present Time: Second Supplement to Paper
Trans. Devon Assoc., 1887, Vol XIX, pp. 547-554.
by
Edward Parfitt
Prepared by Michael Steer
Parts of Devonshire have from time immemorial been shaken by earthquakes. This supplement to Mr Parfitt’s paper, read at the Association’s July 1887 Plympton meeting focusses mainly on reports from correspondents on the earthquake shocks experienced in January 1886, that seem to have been delivered with the greatest force somewhere near Dartmouth. Many of the reports were obtained from material published in the Western Morning News of January 5th, 1886, and entitled “Earthquake Shock in the South Hams”. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
