History of the Classification and Nomenclature of North Devon Rocks
Trans. Devon Assoc., 1879, Vol XI, pp.180-190.
by
Townshend M. Hall, F.G.S.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1879 Ilfracombe meeting. Most of the geology in north Devon is sedimentary in origin. Limestone (also sedimentary, composed of sea creatures) occurs in thin and infrequent layers near Ilfracombe, Saunton Down and Morte Point. All are Devonian (laid down 408-360m years ago). The author, Mr Townshend Monkton Hall was a noted Mineralogist who resided at Pilton. His obituary is available in GENUKI. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
