Twenty-Second Report of the Committee on Scientific Memoranda - Electrical

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XXXIII, (1901), pp. 93-99.

by

J Brooking-Rowe (Hon. Secretary)

Prepared by Michael Steer

The report was read at the Association’s July 1901 Exeter meeting. Bonenfant in his comprehensive catalogue of early British earthquakes has pointed out that we tend not to think of Britain as being an earthquake zone but in fact earthquakes happen fairly regularly, admittedly being of only minor or light in intensity. Every so often Devon gets a moderate earthquake but they are not common. At about ten o'clock in the evening of Wednesday, July 18th, 1900, there were reports in the Torquay neighbourhood, of significant earth movements, which, if not actual earthquakes, were earth tremors. Eye witness accounts of these shocks were given by observers at Torquay, Cockington, Teignmouth, Torcross, and Brixham. They were also noticed in Plymouth. The disturbance extended beyond South Devon. This short index provides the names and locations of those who reported the incidents.  The report is from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
