Notes on the Chase of the Wild Red Deer
in the Counties of Devon and Somerset
With an appendix descriptive of remarkable runs and incidents connected with the Chase
from the year 1790 to the year 1860
by
Charles Palk Collyns
London: Longman, Green, Longman & Roberts (1862), illus. map. xvi, 273 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
Charles Palk Collyns was youngest son of William Collyns, surgeon of Kenton, born in 1793 and followed his father's profession in Dulverton from 1814. He married Anne, daughter of Aaron Moore of Spreydon House, Broadclyst. in 1816. He kept his diaries from 1816 until his death in 1864. The family's long connection with medicine, provided three generations of surgeons in Dulverton. The draft of his published work on hunting is a rich source for the sport, particularly for the Devon and Somerset Staghounds of which he was a founder member in 1837. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the University of Minnesota Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
