Some Ancient Roads in South Devon
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1884, Vol XVI, pp. 453-479.
by
Richard W. Cotton
Prepared by Michael Steer
The present paper was read at the Association’s July 1884 Newton Abbot meeting. As T.C Jose stated, in his paper presented at the Association’s 1919 Torquay meeting “The surface of our loved county, is a palimpsest of its history”. From main roads connecting towns and cities to meandering green lanes and mysterious paths to nowhere, Devon’s highways and byways are steeped in history. South Devon’s topography varies considerably and there are generally several ways to move from one place to another. A number of areas, for example, Dartmoor and the South Hams provide a network of hills with deeps valleys between them. Travellers might likely have taken the higher ridge paths, which in some instances extend lengthy distances across the county. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
