Prepared by Michael Steer
The Note relates to a paper presented at the Devonshire Association's July 1903, Sidmouth meeting, and refers to a MSS record of Dr Milles, Dean of Exeter's 1754-5 survey of Devonshire's clergy, from a copy lodged with the Bodleian Library. The Dean sent every parochial clergyman in the county a list of 100 questions. Only about a quarter of those contacted responded. He had intended to use the information from his survey in a History of Devon, which alas was never completed. The Note provides examples of some humorous responses. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. The copy of this rare book is held in the collection of Albert William Bryant Messenger, and is available from the Internet Archive.
