Devonshire Tokens issued in the Seventeenth Century

From the 17th to the early 19th century in the British Isles and North America, Tokens were commonly issued by traders in times of acute shortage of coins of the realm to enable trading activities to proceed. The token was a pledge redeemable in goods but not necessarily for coins. These tokens never received official sanction from government but were accepted and circulated quite widely. Most tokens indicate the name of their issuer. Tokens would also normally indicate the trading establishment concerned, either by name or by picture. Most were round, but they are also found in square, heart or octagonal shapes. This paper, presented at the Association's July 1872 Exeter meeting includes an extensive and previously unpublished catalogue of Devonshire tokens from the 1600s. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
