On Silver Regal Money Coined in Devonshire Mints
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol 10 (1878), pp. 384-387.
by
H.S. Gill
Prepared by Michael Steer
In his paper, presented at the Association's August 1878 meeting, the author, who had contributed three previous papers on 17th century Devon tradesmen's tokens, focussed on silver coinage minted in Devon during the Anglo-Saxon period. Of the Devonshire Royal Mints, that at Exeter was by far the most important. The other mints in Devon were at Totnes and Lydford, while Teignmouth too, with perhaps less certainty, has been claimed as an early mint. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of California Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
NB: Anglo-Saxon written p was pronounced w at this time.
