Some Devonshire Reminiscences of the Nineteenth Century

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XXVIII, (1896), pp. 316-322.

by

Rev S. G. Harris, M.A.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The article was read at the Association’s July 1896 Ashburton meeting. As  Association members approached the end of the 19th century, the author at this annual meeting presented them with an entertaining, sometimes humorous, informative and invaluable retrospective on life in Devon during an important time in their lives. Reminiscences of this type can produce a treasure-house of information and insights. Some of these may be of sufficient general interest to make a contribution to the recording of the past, although this is not usually the case.  The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
