The first visit of Charles I. to Devon
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 10 (1878), pp. 223-236.
by
Paul Q. Karkeek
Prepared by Michael Steer
In July 1642, King Charles commissioned the Marquis of Hertford, lieutenant-general of the six south-western counties including Devon and Cornwall and sent him into the West with instructions to rally support for the Royalist cause. A great expedition to attack Cadiz was proposed. In 1625 Charles came to Plymouth to inspect his fleet and army. In May that year warrants were issued to the deputy lieutenants of the counties to impress quotas of men for the expedition. This paper provides the names of men impressed in Devon's southern division, together with the towns or villages they came from. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of California Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
