Viola in Devon: Some account of the distribution
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 45, (1913), pp. 330-313.
by
H.S. Gill
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s 23rd July, 1913 Buckfastleigh meeting. In recent times, cream teas,”scrumpy” cider as well as Devon Violet pottery and perfume, are each, in the popular mind, associated with Devonshire. However, the paper’s topic; the distribution of Genus Viola in the county is relatively unimportant, since for the genealogist, Miss Larter provides a singular example of basic research recording the names and locations of botanists, as well as Devonians with a specific interest in matters botanical in our county during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Her paper can be found in a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
