The facts on which Blackmore based Lorna Doone (10th ed.)
Sir Atholl Oakeley
Ilfracombe: North Devon Ltd., (n.d.)
Prepared by Michael Steer
This informative and engaging booklet has proved a best-seller for the Doone Valley tourism industry, with its author claiming that prior to the 10th edition, over 55,000 copies had been sold. Its goal is to present information and argument that will address, for visitors to the Doone Valley, several commonly held misunderstandings concerning Blackmore's novel. Strangely, claims its author, at the time the booklet was written, such issues as the origins of the tale, the correct location of places mentioned in the story, Doone ancestry, and historical evidence to support the existence of such major characters as John Ridd, Tom Fagus and Carver Doone had not been researched. The booklet is profusely illustrated with photographs of many of the places mentioned in the novel. Since it is unpaginated, page numbers have been assigned by the indexer as an aide to the genealogist.
