The History of Devonshire:
From the Earliest Period to the Present (Vol. 1)
by
Rev. Thomas Moore
Robert Jennings, 62, Cheapside 1829-[1833] 3 v. : ill., maps
Prepared by Michael Steer
Rev Thomas Moore was an erudite and reasonably prolific historian. His three-volume work "The history of Devonshire from the earliest period to the present" was published between 1829 and [1833]. This first volume consists of four books: Book I - General Description, Book II - General History, Book III - Outlines of the Geology, Physical Geography and Natural History of Devonshire, and Book IV - Agriculture, Products, Manufacturers, Trade and Commerce. (Vol. 2 consists of biographies of distinguished Devon characters, Vol. 3 of drawings of English scenes.) The General History draws extensively from such luminaries as Geoffrey of Monmouth, Polwhele, Leland, Risdon and Westcote. It also provides a very complete account of Devon's part in the Civil War and its aftermath. A cursory Google search reveals that Moore's History is still being used as a quotation quarry for several Devon local history websites. Book III was contributed by E W Brayley, Jnr. ALS, a Tutor and Lecturer in the physical sciences at Hazelwood and Bruce Castle schools and best known for his topographical history of Surrey. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy held in the Bodleian collection that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
