Devonshire Gleanings from Manningham's Diary
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol 7 (1875), pp. 376-386.

John Manningham (died 1622) was a lawyer and diarist, a contemporary source for Elizabethan and Jacobean life and the London dramatic world, including William Shakespeare. His diary, preserved among the Harleian Manuscripts was first printed by the Camden Society in 1868. It covers the period from January 1602 to April 1603. At the time, the writer was a student in the Middle Temple. The work is a medley of anecdotes of London life, political rumours, accounts of sermons, and memoranda of journeys. The paper delivered at the Association's July 1875 Torrington meeting provides a potpourri of notes and memoranda, gleaned from the diary and all relating to Devonshire. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
