The Devonshire Domesday –
Part VI: Some Notes on Part I of “Domesday” Identifications.

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXXIV, (1902) pp. 715-731.

by

Rev. Oswald J. Reichel. M.A., B.C.L., F.S.A.

Prepared by Michael Steer

This lengthy paper was read at the Association’s July 1902 Bideford meeting. It was produced in response to the author’s seminal paper on the Hundreds of Devon, presented in the Association’s 1901 Transactions, vol. XXXIII, pp. 554-602, partly for purposes of explanation and correction. By way of review, in that paper, Rev Reichel had explained that most of the counties of England were divided into hundreds or wapentakes from the late Anglo-Saxon period. In attempting to deal with the hundreds of Devon as they are found in Domesday times, the author had first considered current views on the origin and meaning of the word “Hundred”; then reviewed the materials that were available for determining the nature of the Hundred as an institution in England, finally focussing on some peculiarities of the Devonshire hundreds. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
