Concerning some old habits and decaying industries
formerly prevalent in the west of England,
and more particularly in the county of Devon

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 39 (1907), pp. 156-178.

by

W.H. Thornton

Prepared by Michael Steer

Rev Thornton's paper is a rather pessimistic chronicle of economic decline in the Westcountry during the Hanoverian period. The gradual decline of mining, agriculture, lace-making, the potteries, granite quarries, fishing, serge-making, tanning, and carpet manufacture has seen its economy become increasingly dependent on tourism - some of Britain's most spectacular coastal scenery being found here. Cornwall is in fact today, one of the poorest parts of Western Europe. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
