Rev Thornton's paper is a rather pessimistic chronicle of economic decline in the Westcountry during the Hanoverian period. The gradual decline of mining, agriculture, lace-making, the potteries, granite quarries, fishing, serge-making, tanning, and carpet manufacture has seen its economy become increasingly dependent on tourism - some of Britain's most spectacular coastal scenery being found here. Cornwall is in fact today, one of the poorest parts of Western Europe. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries.
