Early use of Paper in Devonshire

Devon & Cornwall Notes & Queries 11, (1920-21), pp. 33-36.

by

Hugh R. Watkin

Prepared by Michael Steer

Britain's rich history of papermaking dates back more than five hundred years. Watkin's Note focuses primarily on records of paper use in Devon during the Middle ages and Tudor period. The paper industry, however, was at its height in Devon in the first half of the nineteenth century with 25 or more mills in operation throughout that period including up to five in Exeter, at Trew's Weir (active as a paper mill 1834-1982) and Head Weir (1798-1967) near the centre of Exeter, Lower Wear (1778-1829) and Upper Wear (1704-1884) to the south of Exeter near Topsham and Exwick Mill (1806-1860) on the other side of the river above Exeter. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. The copy of this rare book is held in the collection of Albert William Bryant Messenger, and is available from the Internet Archive.
