Principles of the “Domesday Survey” and “Feudal Aids”

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XXXII, (1900), pp. 521-551.

by

Rev. T.W. Whale, M.A.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s August 1900 Totnes meeting. The Domesday Book is one of our nation’s most famous historical records and is held by The National Archives. Together with the Exeter Domesday, held in Exeter Cathedral’s Library, it is a cornucopia for the genealogist. In this presentation, Rev. Whale has analysed the ancient Domesday survey texts by identifying the tax relationships of many early Devon land-owning families within the rapidly emerging Norman feudal structure imposed by the Conqueror. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
