Index to Domesday Analysis Vol. xxviii.,

and Testa de Nevil Tax Roll, Vol. xxx., with Corrections

Trans. Devon. Assoc. XXXIV, (1902), pp. 289-324.

by

Rev. T. W. Whale

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was read at the Association’s July 1902 Bideford meeting. Its author provides a series of detailed analyses and lists of suggestions for corrections to the working drafts linked to the Association’s Domesday Committee having for several years focussed on transcribing and accurately translating the Devonshire section of Domesday, as well as its relationship to the Testa de Nevil Tax roll for Devon. A great many of Devon’s ancient place names are tied to the names of the original land owners, so that the paper becomes a treasury of the very early Devon individual and family names that are associated with land possession in the county, providing a cornucopia of inestimable value to the genealogist. The paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
