Analysis of the Exon "Domesday” in Hundreds
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 35, (1903), pp. 662-712.
by
Rev. T.W. Whale
Prepared by Michael Steer
This paper was presented at the Association’s July 1903 Sidmouth meeting. The most ambitious project initiated by the Association in its early days was the transcription, translation from mediaeval Latin and publication of one of Exeter Cathedral Library’s greatest treasures, the Exeter or Exon Domesday (written between A.D. 1080-83). A number of the Exon Domesday project-related papers were produced as an aid to analysis by Committee members during this period, of which this meticulous paper is an example. The author’s purpose was to reproduce the Domesday survey in a new form that would aid translation. ("This paper is meant to reproduce the Domesaday Survey for Devon (made A.D. 1080-3) in an abridged and analytic form. The difficulty of thus arranging it in hundreds is much greater in this district than elsewhere, because the name of the hundred is not affixed to each manor.") The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
