History of the Exon “Domesday”

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XXXVII, (1905), pp. 246-283.

by

Rev. T.W. Whale

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was read at the Association’s July 1905 Princetown meeting. The most ambitious project initiated by the Association in its early days was the transcription, translation from mediaeval Latin and publication of one of Exeter Cathedral Library’s greatest treasures, the Exeter or Exon Domesday (written between A.D. 1080-83). A number of the Exon Domesday project-related papers were produced as an aid to analysis by Committee members during this period, of which this paper is an example.  The Committee’s purpose was to reproduce the Domesday survey in a new form that would aid translation. Much of this paper is in tabular form, replete with pages of text revision. It is, however, a cornucopia of Saxon and Norman land-owner names linked to their property holdings, from a very early period of our county’s history. The paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
