Merchants used 'marks' from as early as the 13th century and continued to use them for the next five hundred years. In medieval times the risk of piracy or shipwreck made it became customary for merchants to divide goods between several vessels, rather than risk their cargo in one ship. Adequate marking of goods was essential. A mark on a bale established legal evidence of ownership. Marks were also used by such craftsmen as masons, armourers and goldsmiths. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
