Vicars Buried at Holne

John Rowe - vicar from 1709 to 1746 - was buried at Staverton 01 October 1746.
John Dolbeare Parham - vicar from 1829 to 1858 - was buried at Frome Vanchurch Dorset 04 October 1858.

On Mogridge's resignation [1783] John Charter was presented to the benefice by Sarah Nosworthy of Dartmouth [widow]. Charter resigned in 1821 and was succeeded by William Ilbert - after who'm followed - Samuel Lane [snr] [1827] - John Dolbear Parkham [1829] and John Gill [18[53]].

**Notes from the parish register[s]:

Richard Kaye was ejected by the Puritans and died before the restoration. His predecessor was Samuel Jones who was vicar from 1588 to 1628 and was buried at Holne on the 20th August, 1628. Richard Kaye [vicar] was buried on the 14th March, 1654/55.

The next vicar was Nicholas Stephens 24th October, 1660, to 1699, and who was buried at Holne on the 12th July, 1699. He was succeeded by Nicholas Hunt who was vicar from 1699-1709. He was buried at Holne on the 09th February, 1708/09, and was succeeded by John Rowe [1709-1746].

Parish Note:

Charles Ellis of the parish of St Just in the county of Cornwall by his last will and testament bearing date the 22nd June, 1660, did bequeth unto the parish church of Holne in the words following, the sum of ten shillings viz:

"Item: I give and bequeath to the parish church of Holne, Devon, where I was born the sum of tenn shillings to be paid within one year after my death".

It is noted that the legacy was paid on the 20th July, 1706, and that it was paid to John Hewet a Church-warden by Charles Ellis, the grand-son of the deceased. Witnessed by: William Davis and Arthur Tolchard.

The tombstone of Roger Hannaford was placed [on the repairing of the church 1857] near the reading desk. Signed: J. Gill. It then states that 'the reading desk was replaced in 1892 by a lectern'.
