Description & Travel

Ide is a small village situated in a lushly green valley a mile and a half to the south-west of the city of Exeter. There is a long street of houses and buildings which run up a steep hill towards Haldon, a small area around the Green and the church, and lastly a small group of houses known as 'West Town'. Ide brook flows into a wide and shallow course, known as the Watersplash, as it enters the village flowing past the picturesque cottages of The College and the Huntsman Inn, on its way to the little Alphin river.

History

There are several historical studies of Devon and Exeter which touch lightly on the village of Ide, but the most comprehensive work is 'A History of the People and Parish of Ide', by Dr Donald Burnett (see below). This book covers many aspects of Ide, starting from its origins as the Marshall farm in pre-Saxon times, and ending with its struggle to survive after the loss of 82 men in the First World War. The book makes references to many Ideites, including photographs of many who died in WWI.
