Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 8 (1876). pp. 420-426.

Robert Dymond & Rev Treasurer Hawker

Prepared by Michael Steer

John Ford was baptised 17 April 1586 at Ilsington Church as the second son of Thomas Ford (1556-1610) of Bagtor in the parish of Ilsington, by his wife Elizabeth Popham (d.1629) of the Popham family of Huntworth in Somerset. Her monument is in Ilsington Church. Thomas Ford's grandfather was John Ford (d.1538) of Ashburton (the son and heir of William Ford of Chagford, who purchased the estate of Bagtor in the parish of Ilsington), Ford was a major playwright during the reign of Charles I. His plays deal with conflicts between individual passion and conscience, and the laws and morals of society at large. A fragmentary pedigree of the Ford family is presented on p. 426. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
