Kingsbridge estuary with rambles in the neighbourhood
by
Sarah Prideaux Fox
London: Hamilton Adams & Co. (1864). 172pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
Sarah Prideaux Fox (1813-1885) was author of a number of local histories and books written for Devon's emerging tourism industry. These books are now severally described as "scarce antiquarian" and hers include; Kingsbridge and its surrounds (1874), and History of Kingsbridge, Salcombe and its neighbours (1878). The Prideaux and Fox families were Westcountry minor gentry, connected by marriage to the Crocker-Bulteel families. The author modestly describes her book as "not much beyond a selection of materials culled from various sources, and strung together in a connected form". The copy from which this index was made bears an inscription "To Caroline Fox with much love from Charles Prideaux, 1869". The book is dedicated to "Charles Prideaux, FLS, an old inhabitant of Kingsbridge and a beloved relative". This book, held as part of theUniversity of Wisconsin Library Collection was produced from a digital copy that can be downloaded from https://books.google.co.uk/books, with a search by either author of title. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
