Fourth Report of the Committee on Devonshire Verbal Provincialisms
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XIII, (1881), pp. 78-97.
by
F.T. Elworthy, Member of Council of the Philological Society
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Committee’s Report was read at the Association’s July 1881 Dawlish meeting. Its purpose was to note and record current and past use of any Verbal Provincialisms in Devonshire, in either written or spoken language, that were not included in the lists published in the Association’s Transactions. At this, its fourth meeting, committee members expressed “their deep and unfeigned regret at the retirement of their old and valued friend, Mr. Pengelly, both from the work of the Committee and from the Editorship” The Committee’s report, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitization of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
