LIFTON, a parish in the hundred of LIFTON,county of DEVON, 4 miles (E. by N.) from Launceston,containing 1214 inhabitants. The living is a rectory,in the archdeaconry of Totness, and diocese of Exeter,rated in the king's books at £31. 2. 11., and in the patronageof Harris Arundel, Esq. The church is dedicatedto St. Mary. Two schools are supported by voluntarycontributions: there are mines of manganese in thisparish. The rivers Tonkay and Lyd flow in the vicinity.Cattle fairs are held on the 2nd of February, on HolyThursday, and October 28th. There is a medicinalspring near Lifton bridge.
