Some Further Notes on Exmouth Warren

by

J.M. Martin, C.E. etc.

Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1893, Vol XXV, pp.406-415.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was read at the Association’s July 1893 Torquay meeting. It built on a paper read by the present author at the Association’s Exeter meeting, July, 1872, in which he described and discussed extensive erosion problems at Exmouth Warren. The issue had first been raised in a paper entitled “The encroachment of the sea on the Exmouth Warren”, read by Captain Peacock, F.R.G.S., originally, before the Exeter Naturalist’s Club at Starcross in the summer of 1869, and subsequently, at the meeting of the British Association held in Exeter in the same year. At the club’s first meeting in 1871, Captain Peacock addressed the changes that had taken place since his paper; which changes, though continuous, were comparatively unnoticed, as there had in the intervals been no such gales as that which in January, 1869, swept away so much of the Warren. In 1872 and 1876, Mr Martin presented a paper to the Association on the gradual wastage of the outer Warren, with some speculations on its cause, and suggestions for its prevention. The subject was also dealt with by Mr. Ussher, in papers read before the Association in 1876 and 1878; and down to the latter of these dates, the information contained in the papers provided a general history of the Warren, and, so far as was then known, the rate at which it was being wasted away. The object of the present paper was to trace the course and rate of this action down to 1893.The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive.
