The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine: An illustrated magazine combining practical information, instruction and amusement. Vol. 1, London: S.O Beeton, 248 Strand, W1 (1866), illus. pp. 233-237.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine was published by Samuel Orchart Beeton from 1852 to 1879, with a supplement written by his wife Mrs Beeton between 1859 and 1861. These supplements were later collected as her Book of Household Management. Beeton's intention was that it should "tend to the improvement of the intellect".The magazine published articles on middle-class domestic issues, fashion and fiction. This article's author is perhaps best known for his short, rather romantic books on such popular Victorian historical themes as The Story of King Richard's Days (1866); and a family orientated guide, for example, What Shall My Son Be: Hints to Parents on the Choice of a Profession or Trade (1870). This rare magazine was produced from a digital copy held by the Bodleian Library that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
