A history of the church at Lydford with some account of its rectors

by

Mrs. G.H. Radford

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 21 (1989), pp. 171-200.

Prepared by Michael Steer

St Petrock's Church history dates back to the 6th century. In the 900's Lydford was a Saxon Burgh equal in status to Exeter. Ethelred established a mint at Lydford. The earliest mention of the church is in 1287 when Henry III granted the tithes of Dartmore to the church of St. Petroc. The only remains of this early church is the Font, which may be Saxon or early Norman. The church was enlarged in the 13th century and re-dedicated on 3rd August 1261 by Bishop Walter Bronescombe. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
